Unlike most desktop PCs, the VAIO LS1 doesn't have any user-accessible parts inside. Instead you're stuck with the default configuration, but that's not a bad set of specs by any means. The system includes 2GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive (running at 7,200rpm, not a slower 5,400rpm laptop drive), and a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo T2400 CPU.
That's the same CPU as in Apple's iMac (the 17-inch version), and it's a step up from the 1.6GHz Intel Core Duo T2050 we saw recently in the small-form-factor Shuttle XPC X100. The VAIO LS1 is slightly faster than the Shuttle and is significantly faster than another compact system, the HP Pavilion Slimline s7500y, which relies on Intel's last-generation 1.7GHz Intel Pentium M 735 CPU.
With integrated Intel 945GM graphics, This is not the most extreme gaming machine, but watching movies, playing music, and general computing, the VAIO LS1 performs perfectly well.
Packed in with the VAIO LS1 are a wireless keyboard and mouse and the custom Media Center remote. The low-profile aluminum-clad keyboard has a folding cover that doubles as a wrist rest, then flips up to cover the keys when the system isn't being used. Anyone who's had experience with a technologically curious cat will appreciate this feature.
In keeping with Sony's taste for proprietary technology, much of the bundled software is custom, including Sony SonicStage for managing music; Life Flow, a widget-like app with weather, news, and other useful tools; and Sony Click to DVD for burning discs.
Small stereo speakers are built into the case, and they're perfectly fine for casual listening, you'll
Sony backs the VAIO VGC-LS1 with a standard one-year warranty, which includes 24/7 toll-free phone and Web site support, with FAQs and documentation. A built-in software app connects you directly to the support section of Sony's Web site and gives you easy access to system documentation and settings.
HP includes a 2.6GHz Athlon 64 X2 5200+ dual core processor in this Windows Vista Home Premium-based system, along with 2GB of 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM and an integrated Nvidia GeForce 6150SE graphics chip. That's a strong set of features for pretty much everything. It also comes with a big, fat 500GB hard drive, and a host of removable data and peripheral inputs. Throw in the NTSC analog cable tuner, the over-the-air HD tuner, and the dual-layer DVD burner and you have what looks like a solid mainstream digital entertainment desktop.
#3 Gateway FX8030 Desktop PC
Unlike Dell's recent XPS 700 and the XPS 710 announced today, Gateway hasn't reinvented its high-end case with the FX530XT. The only real difference between this and the FX510XL is the newer model's gunmetal finish and the addition of some color. But the changes make a striking visual improvement to the chassis compared to the staid gray-and-black, plastic-looking FX510XL. It now looks much more like a serious PC.
Our FX530XT came with the requisite pair of optical drives--a double-layer DVD burner and a standard DVD-ROM drive, as well as a 9-in-1 media card reader. That's all great stuff, and at this point, it's expected in a high-end PC. We also like the keyboard that Gateway sent: It's attractive and sleek but also feels substantial. The mouse, on the other hand, looks nice, but lacks the extra thumb-side buttons many gamers appreciate.
#4 HP Pavilion SlimLine s3020n
Hewlett-Packard's new Pavilion SlimLine s3020n PC comes bearing HP's new glossy black vision for all of its PCs and laptops. We've long complained that HP gray was only a few boring steps removed from old-school desktop beige, and we're glad to see HP took some steps to make its PCs look more exciting. We're also impressed with this system's combination of performance, features, and value.
This retail-only s3020n comes with a modest configuration. A 2.0GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ comes paired with 1GB of 533MHz DDR2 RAM, a roomy-enough 250GB 7,200 rpm hard drive, and a multiformat DVD burner, with the obligatory LightScribe capability, which lets you print your own custom black-and-white images onto the surface of a blank disc.
